AMA Calls for ICD-10 Contingencies – June 24, 2015

A news release by Health leaders Media reports that the American Medical Association (AMA) is once again asking for a contingency plan that will accommodate healthcare providers struggling to comply with the new ICD-10 implementation targeted for October 1, 2015. The newly elected president of the AMA Dr. Steven J Stack said that “it is absolutely imperative that there is better end-to-end testing, a grace period, and hardship exemptions in place.”

Stack is also calling for HHS secretary Burwell to make sure that carriers pay on a timely basis during the adaptation and initial few months of the transition.  Causing concern is that it is an increase of about 400% in the number of codes. Treating this like a “flip-the-switch” activity from September 30th to October 1st is a frightening thought. Studies have shown that only 25% of respondents had begun testing and verifying their systems and controls pertaining to the new system. This adds additional concern that the switch-over may be more chaotic than anticipated.
