King v. Burwell-Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Subsidies for Healthcare Subscribers – June 24th 2015

In a surprising decision today the Supreme Court of the United States supported the provision of the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) which provided tax relief for poor families that have signed up for health coverage but cannot afford the premiums. In a 6-3 vote the court.

Justice Scalia in his dissent vociferously challenged the ruling and remarked sarcastically from the bench on Thursday that “we really should start calling this law Scotus-care.” This statement obviously inferring that the two decisions already made by the Court (favoring its continuance) actually made the ACA a product of the Court.

The NY Times reported that the President appeared in the rose garden following the release of the Court’s,  decision and said that “what we’re not going to do is unravel what has now been woven into the fabric of America.”  http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/26/us/obamacare-supreme-court.html?_r=0

The long awaited decision generated Speaker Boehner’s observation that “the problem with Obamacare is still fundamentally the same: The law is broken. It’s raising costs for American families, it’s raising costs for small businesses and it’s just fundamentally broken. And we’re going to continue our efforts to do everything we can to put the American people back in charge of their health care and not the federal government.”
